Book in this order
The marquee comes first because it sets the footprint: where the dance floor goes, where the generator sits, where the trackway route runs if the garden needs one. Confirm the marquee and the date, and everything else has a shape to fit around.
Second wave: welfare and power. Toilets and the generator need the same site visit questions as any other outdoor event, ground, access, distance from the house, and a home garden rarely has the spare electrical capacity a marquee party actually draws.
Third wave: furniture, the bar, PA and catering equipment. All of this can confirm once the marquee footprint and guest number are settled, and most of it can flex by 10 percent as RSVPs come in.
The two things first-timers miss
Neighbours and noise. A private party does not need a licence if drinks are free, but amplified music after 11pm in a residential garden is exactly the kind of thing a council treats as a statutory noise nuisance if a neighbour complains. Tell the street the date is coming, agree a reasonable cut-off with the DJ, and the goodwill saves more grief than any amount of soundproofing.
Garden access for the marquee lorry. A driveway that looks wide enough on a dry Tuesday can be a different proposition for a marquee wagon and a catering van on the day, especially after rain. Measure the actual gate width and turning space, and price trackway if the route crosses grass rather than hardstanding.
